Course Overview

World History I covers the rise of civilization to about 1500 AD. The beginnings of civilization in all areas of the world are covered: Egypt, Middle East, China, India, Europe, and the Americas. The units will cover their location in place and time, as well as their politics, religion, economies, art, and architecture. A particular emphasis is placed on the Greek and Roman civilizations and their influence on western civilization (us).

Requirements

Students are required to bring to class each day the following items: Pencil, red pen, and spiral bound notebook. A red pen will be provided at the beginning of the year and should be retained for history class only. The spiral bound notebook insures that the large volume of class notes do not get out of order. These notes will be graded.

In addition to the above daily requirements, the student from time to time will be required to bring class work, have notes and progress reports signed and returned, or bring colored pencils for map work.

Grading Procedures

There will be no optional work except as demanded by an IEP or gifted plan. All work is expected to be completed by all students.  Late work will only be accepted due to extenuating circumstances (absence, school functions, etc.)

Because individual students have different strengths, a variety of assessment methods should be incorporated. In order to give as many opportunities for success as possible, no one assignment will affect a student’s grade more than another. This will allow a student with weak testing skills to still succeed, as long as they work diligently. To allow for the inclusion of “good days” and “bad days” the lowest grade for each term will be omitted from the average.

Because I have no control on the student’s home environment, homework will consist of reading the text, studying for tests, extra credit work (which will have only a positive affect on their grade), and finishing any work not completed in class (though ample time to complete all assignments will be provided in class).

Grades will be assigned in accordance with the county’s grading scale.
