The HAPPENINGS

Pre-AP:  Students are currently working on comma rules, semi-colon rules, and co-ordinating conjuction rules.  Students will correct sentences and also write compound sentences using correct punctuation and grammar.  Annotating will be taught and applied first to short paragraphs, then to larger fiction selections.  Students will move from teacher led annotating, to group annotating, to individual annotating.  A presentation where they have annotated a selection of their choice will follow.

Students will also begin reading Farhrenheit 451.  Class discussions, answering questions in short answer and essay format, and annotating will be compiled with this text.  Students will also compare the text to modern day issues.

SOL:  9.3, 9.6, 9.7, *9.2

Regular:  Students will be focusing on a quick review of fiction vocab including, but not limited to:  plot, personification, imagery, static and dynamic characters, setting, denotation and connotation, etc.  Students will interact with these terms daily, repeating them out loud for memorization of definitions.  Students will also be applying these terms to fiction short stories.  They will start with one term, but by the end be expected to complete a paper showing answers to all terms.

Students will also begin learning to annotate short stories.  Students will be working with Wikki Stix to appeal to kinesthetic learners.  They will also create posters and other hands on activities to increase learning.  Teacher will lead lessons, followed by some group work, and individual work.
